Slow and Steady
Over the years since launching this project, I haven't shared much more than the art. I've mentioned in passing that I've got stories and worldbuilding I'm working on in the background. But aside from The King Ritual, the novella I released last autumn, I haven't shared much of that.
I'll be honest, I've never been happy with the things I've written in the past. They've been too messy, or they've been the wrong story. Something always felt... wrong.
I started a comic a few years ago and only got two episodes in before I decided the story wasn’t working. I wanted to make major changes, and it meant abandoning the project. I don’t take this lightly, but it cleared the way for me to work on something else.
That something else is a story that I’m already quite pleased with. I spent the first six months of 2024 drafting the novel through illness, surgery, recovery, and uprooting the family to move into our new home. But that story kept me going when I didn’t have the energy for much else.
Julian, the main character of both The King Ritual and the upcoming novel
Was it perfect? No. Far from it. But it was the first time I’ve felt this excited about a story. I felt like I was finally getting close to something good.
Fast forward to spring 2025. I’ve spent months reading the story back, cutting things that don’t fit, adding things to make it all make sense. In total I cut about a quarter of the draft to rework it into something better.
I’ve been working on rewrites for a couple of months now, and with the help of my wife (the first reader for anything I write), I’ve dissected more of the details and reworked some of the major issues.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m still writing. It’s a long process, and one that I’m thoroughly enjoying. It’s been incredibly satisfying making changes to make the story stronger.
The process can be a bit weird at times…
I’m not yet ready to share any details about this novel, but I’m hoping to keep people a bit more in the loop with this project as I flesh it out better.
That said, I do hope to share some information about the project later this year - when I plan to have all of the rewrites and edits done and can more confidently announce some things.
Until then, I’ll leave you with this: If you want to get to know the main character of the novel a little better before I share future updates, The King Ritual features the same character and takes place a short time before the events of the novel.
If you want to receive updates about the upcoming novel, you’ll want to head over to the mailing list and sign up. I’ll be updating there with more information as it becomes available.
That’s all I needed to cover today, so I’m going to end it there. You can find me on all of my socials by searching unspokengods, or you can find me on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook by clicking on those blue words.
That’s all for now. Take care!
